GOWNS

to clarify a little

i believe that art should be giving back to the community as well as enriching individuals’ lives, but none of this should be hinging on individual consumer choices. declaring that it’s “pennies or patrons” was a bit crass on my part. i’m not being prescriptive with that, just descriptive

artists are broke or they’re at the mercy of an aristocrat // a distributor. it’s so rare that an artist gets control over their own work while making enough money to live

ideally, it’d be cool to have a society that was much more communal, where art was supported and shared. but we don’t live there…so is it any surprise that people pirate stuff? or that the stuff with the greediest middlemen is getting pirated the most? (i’m talking about music from major labels, large-scale-distributed movies, and so on)

the onus is placed on the consumer; the consumer is running out of money to spend; is it any surprise that they’re hesitating to shell out $20 for a dvd? or $35 for IMAX 3D?

why should “”joe the plumber”” care about artistic integrity? and why doesn’t the government want to provide more resources for artists + to build communities? IN THESE TIMES?
