these giant catfish (namazu) are usually kept in check by this big rock, watched by the god kashima. when he went out of town, he left ebisu, god of fishing and commerce, in charge of the rock. damn fool fell asleep on the job. “Kashima rushes home on horseback while the city burns, and Raijin the thunder god defecates drums.”
